CANCER PAIN PREVALENCE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF CANCER PAIN PATIENTS IN DR Sardjito
ABSTRACT: Background. Pain is a very common problem in cancer patients. Cancer pain and its intensity is influenced by many factors. The management of cancer pain is often inadequate. Objective. Determine the prevalence of cancer pain and the characteristic of patient with cancer pain in Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta. Methods. A descriptive cross-sectional study design in adult cancer patients visiting Tulip clinic Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta. The patients characteristic difference between the patient with cancer pain and without cancer pain, also between the patient with moderate-severe pain and mild pain, analyzed using ChiSquare, with a significance of p<0,05. Results. Total of 459 subjects with the prevalence of cancer pain 55,8%. Mild pain is experienced by 33,2% patients, moderate pain 35,2%, and severe pain 31,6%. Age, gender, education level, cancer type, distance metastases, multiple metastases, cancer treatment, and comorbidity do not influence cancer pain. Cancer pain is influenced by cancer ulceration (p=0,012) and performance status (p=0,000). Patients with cancer pain who have not received anti pain treatment from physicians is 53,9%. Conclusions. Results showed that the prevalence of cancer pain is 55,8%. Cancer ulcer and performance status influence the presence of cancer pain. Bone metastasis, cancer ulcer, and performance status influence the intensity of cancer pain. Management of cancer pain is still inadequate.
