Correlation between Depression with Cognitive Disorders in Patients with Breast Cancer Undergoing Chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT: Backgroubd : Breast cancer in Indonesia is the second highest incidence behind cervical cancer. It is predicted that breast cancer will be the highest incidence in women in a short time. The number of breast cancer case in Tulip Integrated Cancer Installation of RSUP Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta increases from year to year. Many breast cancer patients experience depression (11-50%) which may lead to amplification of physical symtoms, increased functional impairment and lower compliance. Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment reaches 85% during radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The patients complain about their difficulties in memorizing, attention, concentration and thinking. After that, the patients have not get attention yet. These depression and cognitive impairment influence quality of life of breast cancer patients. The aim is to determine correlation between depression and cognitive impairment in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in Tulip RSUP Dr. Sardjito in October 2014. The research subject are breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy who meet criteria. Depression is valued by BDI and cognitive impairment is valued by MMSE. This research is a non experimental study with cross sectional design. Result : The prevalence of chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy is 14%. The prevalence of depression in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy is 56%. Depression in breast cancer have weakly positive correlation with cognitive impairment. education have strongly positive correlation with cognitive impairment in research subject.
