RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ABILITY TO TAKE CARE OF SELF (DEPENDENT CARE AGENCY) BEHAVIOR WITH PARENT / GUARDIAN MEET IN SELF-CARE (DEPENDENT CARE) CANCER IN CHILDREN SUFFERING IN DR. Sardjito

ABSTRACT: Background: Cancer and its treatment can affect a child's physical condition and have an impact on self-care behaviors. Therefore, a child needs helps from parents to fulfill their self-care to maintain child’s healthiness and improve quality of life. The attitude of the parents or dependent care may be influenced by their ability in undergoing self-care or dependent care agency. Objective: To know the relationship between dependent care agency and the behaviors of parents in fulfilling self-care needs and their behaviors towards their children. Method: This research applies mixed method consisting of quantitative research with cross sectional design and qualitative research with exploration research approach. The research was conducted in August to September 2014 involving 41 parents by using accidental sampling technique. The variable of dependent care agency and parents behaviors toward self-care was evaluated by using questioners of Denyes self-care practice and Denyes self-care agency. Interviews were conducted to support the quantitative data. Data analysis include univariate and bivariate using the Spearman rho test. Result: The average value of the dependent care agency is 102.59 (value range 30-150) and the average value of parental behavior was 24.37 (range 18-36 value). Value of correlation between the dependent care agency with parental behavior was 0.286 (p = 0.045). The results of in-depth interviews obtained five themes, namely meaning and importance of self-care, self-care behaviors, family support, difficulty in performing self-care and hope to nurse. Conclusion: There is a relationship between dependent care agency and self-care behaviors of parents to fulfill self-care in children with cancer.
