Coping strategies RELATIONSHIP WITH THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN BREAST CANCER PATIENTS DR Sardjito

ABSTRACT: Background: Breast cancer is a health problem in Indonesia. Some common problems in cancer disease include physical, psychosocial, psychological, and spiritual problems as a consequence of therapy and the disease itself that can affect quality of life. Coping strategy using problem focused coping (PFC) method and emotion focused coping (EFC) method are needed to minimize the decline of quality of life of the patient. Objective: To identify correlation between coping strategy and quality of life of breast cancer patients at Dr. Sardjito Hospital. Method: The study used descriptive correlative approach and cross sectional design. It was carried out from 26th July to 5th September 2014 at Tulip Integrated Cancer Installation of Dr. Sardjito Hospital, involving 35 samples determined through purposive sampling technique. Data were obtained through Ways of Coping Questionnaire for coping strategy and Short Form-36 for quality of life and analyzed using Chi Square. Result: The result of the study showed that coping strategy used was outside EFC and PFC (82.9%). The majority of patients had quality of life above the average particularly in the vitality domain, i.e. 85.7%. There was correlation between coping strategy and domain of role limitation due to physical reason (p=0.013 ), physical function (p=0.771), role limitation due to emotion (p=0.047), pain (p=0.342), vitality (p=0.877), general health ( p=0.771), social function (p=0.771), mental health (p=0,116) in quality of life. Conclusion: There was significant correlation between coping strategy and quality of life of breast cancer patients, particularly in the domain of physical and emotional role limitation.
