DEPRESSION LEVEL RELATIONS WITH THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN BREAST CANCER PATIENTS Panembahan Senopati Hospital, BANTUL, YOGYAKARTA

ABSTRACT: Background : Breast cancer have an impact on various aspect of life of it is sufferers. Decreasing physical condition, emotional distress, hospitalization, routine theraphy that should be done and social impact that occur can cause psychosocial disturbance and depression that contribute in the changing of individual who suffer from breast cancer quality of life. The correlation between depression and breast cancer patients quality of life is important to investigate because depression and quality of life is an important matter in evaluating the outcome of a therapy. Aim of the study: To understand the correlation between depression level and quality of life in breast cancer patient, describe the depression level of breast cancer patients and describe quality of life of breast cancer patient at Panembahan Senopati Hospital, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Methods :This study is a non experimental research with cross sectional design that involving 33 breast cancer patients (n=33) which have choosen based on purposive sampling technique. The evaluation of depression using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and quality of life evaluation using The Quality of Life Index (QL Index) Spitzer instrument. Spearman correlation was used for data analysis. Results: The Majority of participants are in mild depression (51.5%) and good quality of life ( score 8) are 27,3%. Result of Spearman correlation analysis showing that there is a strong negative correlation, it means that the higher depression level leads to the lower quality of life of breast cancer patients. Conclusions: There is a strong correlation between depression level and breast cancer patients quality of life, majority of breast cancer patient suffer from mild depression and good quality of life.
