EDUCATION LEVEL RELATIONS AND SECURITY NUMBER ONE YEAR OF LIVING IN BREAST CANCER PATIENTS
ABSTRACT: Background: Breast Cancer is a major public health problem in Indonesia. Breast cancer has the highest prevalence and incidence ratio among the most cancer occured in Indonesian women. One of the most influenced factor of cancer overall survival are patients compliance, which depends on the educational and economical background level. Studies in some developed countries have shown that survival rate among cancer patients increased along with patients educational background level. Only few study define the correlation between educational background level and survival rates in breast cancer patients in Indonesia. Aims: To understand the correlation between educational background level and one-year survival in breast cancer patients in Indonesia. Methods: A descriptive observational study was conducted with secondary data. Medical records of 146 patients diagnosed with breast cancer during January 2007-December 2008 in Tulip Integrated Cancer Clinic RSUP dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta were included in this study. Spearman correlation test was used for correlation analysis between patients educational background level and one-year survival. Results: Most breast cancer patients were 41-50 years old (40.4%). It is more common in patients who were married (89%). Patients mostly use insurance to pay the medical expenses. Educational background level demographic divided into: illiterate (2.1%); primary school (38.4%); secondary school (10.3%); highschool (20.3%); higher education (19.9%). Stadium demographic divided into: early (30.1%); LABC (22.6%); advanced (42.5%); unknown (4.8%). Significant result has been discovered between comparison of primary school and secondary school, primary school and highschool, primary school and higher education of overall survival rates (respectively p=.009, p=.004, and p=.001) Conclusion: Higher educational level was associated with higher one-year survival in breast cancer. In order to raise survival in breast cancer patients, health promotion and education must be a concern. Keywords: Breast Cancer, Educational Background Level, Overall Survival
