PERCEPTION OF PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE DECISION PROCESS palliative care CANCER PATIENTS
ABSTRACT: Introduction: Cancer patient in needs palliative condition are encouraged to involve in decision making process. Aims of their involvement to increase human dignity and their satisfication. This condition needs attention from nurses as key role to increase effective communication that impact in patient involvement. Objective: The study aimed to explore nurses' perception in decision making process and to understand what type of decision making by health care providers in palliative care. Method: The study was descriptive explorative with qualitative approach. The population of the study were 22 nurses at Sleman Regency Primary Health Care (n=382). It was taken with a purposive and snowball sampling technique. Data were obtained through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) t and in depth interview. Data analysed with a content analysis technique. Result: The results is defined by themes, there are : (1) Collecting information about the patient current physiological; (2) Making alternative strategies consider by current physiological patient; (3) Selecting of action for implementation; (4) Giving information to patient; (5) Decision making process discussion by patient and family; (6) Patient chooses (or not) treatment; (7) Doing action which is chosen; and (8) Evaluating the treatment. Types of decision making in this study were informed decision making, paternalistic, and shared decision making. Conclusion: This study found that there were presence of discussion by patient and family and health professional were not proceed to reassessment if patient deny the treatment. Informed decision making was the most identified one in this current study.
